Getting Started

I loved this story for a lot of reasons, but most of all because it just happened in a classroom on a normal run of the mill school day. It's something our kids say....

Their teacher related it to me.... It was about Black History Month, it being February and all, and there were some kids really questioning her about it. As the class discussion continued she told me, she tried to emphasize with the kids how even though there is a Black History Month, so is there a month for just about anything any one could identify with! She explained that a lot of those celebrations were now for historical reflection in a lot of instances, but as we become a more Blended society, it's still a way to connect to what generations before experienced. A boy - who is white said...well, "I'm just White". The teacher then told me she explained White isn't just White...nor is Black just Black, and right away she said, she had one of her Black students said, "I'm just Black". She then told me  she started a further conversation with them about her ethnic background...as I remember, and I hope she'll eventually add on here and correct me if I remember wrong, she told them her greatgrand parents were Irish and Native American, they had children who married her grand parent who was African American. As she told me, hoping this explaination would help make them see, that you aren't just one thing or another, but rather a Blend.

It got me thinking about my own Blend and how I hear a lot recently about 'The Browing of America' We are the Melting Pot and I love that we can connect with each other enough to blend, but I hope we remember what is all mixed together in that pot too. I'm hoping with this Blog to get a few, maybe a hundered, a thousand or even a hundred thousand (now that ambitions) people to just talk about their
